New Reading Curriculum!
Walker has chosen to adopt a new reading curriculum for the 2014-2015 school year (and for school years to come). I am very excited to start using the National Geographic: Reach for Reading curriculum! More to come later.
As for our classroom reading procedures, I believe it is important that students are read to every day, and that materials they read on their own (or with their peers) are both of high interest and of appropriate complexity and difficulty. I have an extensive classroom library for student use.
At home, students are expected to spend at least 30 minutes a night reading (ideally, a large part of this time will be with a book appropriate for their reading level). Some of this time can be spent listening to a strong reader (like a parent or an older sibling).
